The first teaser trailer hit overnight for Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the classic Victor Hugo novel and smash Broadway musical Les Misérables. The film stars Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean) and Russell Crowe (Inspector Javert) in the lead roles, but Anne Hathaway (Fantine) is front and centre here performing one of the musical’s signature tunes, ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ (recently made popular by Susan Boyle). She sounds great, and 2012 is obviously going to be her year with a key role in The Dark Knight Rises just around the bend. The footage looks handsomely shot and full of potential, the cast is impressive (Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, Sacha Baron Cohen, Helena Bonham Carter), and everything points toward Les Misérables being an epic, sweeping Oscar contender at the year’s end. However, I’m going to reserve judgement until something a little more substantial surfaces later, as I wasn’t as mad about Hooper’s Oscar-stealing The King’s Speech as most critics were.
Les Misérables opens December 14. Check out the first teaser trailer and an image gallery below (via Collider).
