Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive was my favourite film of 2011, so it should come as no surprise that his latest collaboration with Ryan Gosling is my most anticipated of this year. Only God Forgives stars Gosling as Julian, who lives in exile in Bangkok and runs a Thai boxing club that operates as a front for the family’s drug smuggling business. When his brother is killed, Julian’s mother (Kristen Scott Thomas) arrives and demands that he seek vengeance on the retired police officer responsible (Vithaya Pansringarm). Our first real look at the film arrived today in the form of a tantalizing red-band trailer, and the ominous scenes teased here — hypnotically narrated by Scott Thomas — seem to be every bit as violent and terrific as expected. With Cliff Martinez (Drive) scoring and Larry Smith (Bronson) lensing, Only God Forgives promises to take the heightened emotions and sexy style of Drive into even darker places.
Only God Forgives opens July 19 in the US (July 18 in NZ). Watch the red-band trailer below (via The Playlist).
