Hiroya Oku’s wildly successful manga Gantz has recently been given another adaptation in Japan — following Ichiro Itano’s popular anime series of the same name — this time in the form of two live action films, simply titled Gantz and Gantz: Perfect Answer. Directed by Shinsuke Sato, the films follow a pair of high school students, Kurono (Kazunari Ninomiya) and Kato (Ken’ichi Matsuyama), who are killed by a subway train when trying to rescue a drunk from the tracks. They find themselves transported to the interior of an empty Tokyo apartment, where they and others soon realise they are not able to leave, and at one end of the room is a large and ominous black sphere known as “Gantz”. This collection should appeal to fans of the manga and/or anime, as well as those curious to find out what a big-budget Japanese action film looks like, and A Fistful of Culture has three blu-ray sets to giveaway thanks to Madman.
Gantz is out now on Blu-ray and DVD. Check out the Japanese trailer for the first film plus the Blu-ray cover below.
