Despite the gargantuan success of The Avengers this year (currently the third-highest grossing film in US history), director Joss Whedon is apparently not willing to let the gravy train stop. In a video released on YouTube today, the cult writer-director urges fans to boycott Mike Birbiglia’s forthcoming autobiographical film Sleepwalk With Me, which was a hit at Sundance this year and has had its initially small number of opening screens doubled recently thanks to the #bringsleepwalk hashtag on Twitter. The clip is a novel way for Whedon to throw his weight behind a promising indie film, which has been heralded by the critics as one of the best of the year but seems doomed to not be seen by many.

Producer and This American Life host Ira Glass responded with:
“Fine. If it’s war he wants, it’s war he’ll get.”
Sleepwalk With Me opens limited on August 24 in the US, and stars Mike Birbiglia, Lauren Ambrose, David Wain, Kristen Schaal, Carol Kane and James Rebhorn. Watch the trailer below.
