After some hit (Hanna) and miss (The Soloist) genre diversions, Pride and Prejudice and Atonement director Joe Wright is back to what he does best with an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy‘s classic romance Anna Karenina. Scripted by Tom Stoppard (Brazil, Shakespeare in Love), the film stars Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, and Kelly Macdonald, with Matthew Macfadyen, Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Emily Watson, Olivia Williams and Ruth Wilson. The first trailer arrived today and while it looks somewhat stagebound, the footage here is visually breathtaking and Anna Karenina will no doubt be a major awards contender later this year – likely up against fellow literary adaptations The Great Gatsby and Les Misérables. Anna Karenina opens September 7 in the UK, November 9 in the US. Take a look at the first trailer and poster below (via The Playlist).
