One of the most buzzed-about dramas of the upcoming awards season is Dallas Buyers Club, directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (C.R.A.Z.Y.) and starring an alarmingly thin Matthew McConaughey. The film follows the true life story of Ron Woodruff, a hard-partying Texan who is given a death sentence when he is diagnosed with AIDS in 1985. With medications restricted in the US, Ron begins smuggling more effective treatments into the country for survival and profit. McConaughey has clearly undergone a remarkable physical transformation — as did his co-star, Jared Leto — and if the film is anywhere near as good as his performance looks here, this could be McConaughey’s year for awards glory. With a supporting cast that includes Jennifer Garner, Steve Zahn, Dallas Roberts, Griffin Dunne, Denis O’Hare, and Bradford Cox (of Deerhunter/Atlas Sound, making his screen debut), Dallas Buyers Club promises to be one of the must-see films of late 2013.
Dallas Buyers Club is set for a November 1 release State-side, and sometime December in NZ. Check out the first trailer and poster below.
