The first full trailer arrived today for Dan Scanlon’s feature debut Monsters University, a prequel to Pixar’s 2001 hit Monster’s, Inc., as did an extended preview of the film hosted by the director. The videos feature new footage and characters not previously seen in last year’s teasers, and while the film undoubtedly looks visually stunning and seems to be having some fun with college buddy tropes, the humour relies too much on obvious gags for my liking. I have no doubts that the film will be entertaining — plus feature all sorts of cool character designs and pretty visuals, not to mention great voice acting — but I’m still struggling to see why this prequel is necessary (aside from the obvious financial motivations) and I sincerely hope that it doesn’t tarnish the remarkable original film as the majority of prequels tend to do.
Monsters University opens June 21, 2013 and features the voices of Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray, and Peter Sohn. Check out the first full trailer below, plus an extended preview and two recent posters (via The Playlist).
