David O. Russell’s offbeat romantic-comedy Silver Linings Playbook is shaping up to be a serious awards contender, following rave reviews and an audience award at the recent Toronto International Film Festival. The film stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence as a pair of equally messed-up new friends trying to get back on their feet following tragic events. They’re joined by an impressive supporting cast which includes Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Anupam Kher, Shea Whigham, John Ortiz and Julia Stiles. I’m yet to be impressed by Cooper (who stepped in for Mark Wahlberg), but that looks likely to change under Russell’s assured wing, as both he and the ever-reliable Lawrence are said to give career-best performances here. This second trailer suggests Silver Linings Playbook is everything that critics have hyped it up to be, and I’m very much looking forward to finding out for myself.
Silver Linings Playbook hits US theatres November 21, and NZ on January 25. Check out the second trailer and a new poster below (via The Playlist).
