When the original Dinosaur Jr. lineup of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph reunited back in 2005, few could have expected how goddamn good their new output would be. 2007’s Beyond and 2009’s Farm are both stellar albums which can stand proudly alongside their classic late ’80s releases, and I Bet on Sky continues that great run, reaffirming that Dinosaur Jr. are enjoying the greatest second act in American indie rock. Mascis has been rather busy outside the group of late for a “slacker” — with last year’s surprisingly quiet but impressive solo LP Several Shades of Why, and this year’s psych-instrumental side project Heavy Blanket — but that hasn’t slowed him down any. The group returned strong with the single ‘Watch the Corners‘, and I Bet on Sky — due next week and now available to stream — is another loud, vital, and remarkably fresh album from a group whose formula of lethargic tales of alienation + shrieking guitar solos doesn’t really have any right to sound this good 27 years on. Sebadoh fans will be pleased to hear that Barlow takes lead vocal duties on two tracks (‘Rude’ and ‘Recognition’), while Mascis’ aficionados should know by now to bring their own earplugs!
I Bet On Sky is out September 18. Steam it below (via NPR).
