One of the most highly anticipated and — not coincidentally — critically divisive films of the year is Nicolas Winding Refn’s willfully difficult Drive follow-up, Only God Forgives, which arrives in New Zealand cinemas next week. Once again collaborating with star Ryan Gosling and composer Cliff Martinez, and featuring a bravura performance from Kristin Scott Thomas, this ultraviolent, hyper-stylised and bizarre Thai-set eastern-western will no doubt frustrate many with its challenging lack of narrative, dialogue and likeable characters. However, Refn devotees like myself will be enamoured by the mesmerising aesthetics and bold filmmaking on display throughout — think Valhalla Rising‘s expressionistic narrative meets Drive‘s neon-lit visuals. Only God Forgives is destined to become a cinephile cult favourite akin to David Lynch’s Lost Highway or Gaspar Noe’s Irreversible, and A Fistful of Culture is pleased to be giving away five double passes courtesy of Studiocanal.
Only God Forgives is in cinemas from August 1. Watch the latest trailer below.
