Filmmaker Scott Cooper follows up 2009’s Crazy Heart with another Oscar-hopeful drama, Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale in his first lead role since The Dark Knight Rises. The gritty Pittsburgh-set film is centred on a blue collar steel worker, Russell Bazy (Bale), who cares for his terminally ill father by night. When his brother (Casey Affleck) goes missing following an altercation with a ruthless crime ring and the police turn up nothing, Russell is forced to take matters into his own hands. With a strong supporting cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Sam Shepard and Boyd Holbrook, Cooper’s latest clearly has a lot of potential and could be another awards hit for him. Unfortunately this first trailer is overwhelmed by Pearl Jam’s ‘Release’ — which reportedly inspired some of the writing, leading to Eddie Vedder collaborating on the soundtrack — so it’s difficult to know what to make of it. What is evident, however, is that Bale looks in fine form once again, so let’s hope the next trailer — and more importantly, the film — favours a more subtle approach.
Out of the Furnace is set for a November 27 in the US. Check out the first trailer and poster below.
