A favourite for many at last year’s New Zealand International Film Festival, Christian Petzold’s simmering Cold War thriller Barbara is making a welcome return to our screens this week. Set in 1980, the film stars regular collaborator Nina Hoss (Jerichow, Yella) as Barbara, a Berlin doctor banished to a rural East German hospital as punishment for applying for an exit visa. As she patiently waits for her lover to plot her escape, Barbara tries her best to avoid any kind of relationships, but struggles to avoid the warm attentions of the hospital’s head physician, Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld), who she cannot be sure isn’t a spy. Hoss gives a riveting, understated performance here, and Petzold’s elegant film — which picked up the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2012 Berlin Film Festival — is one of the best European releases of last year.
