The first trailer finally arrived over the weekend for The Place Beyond the Pines, Derek Cianfrance’s highly anticipated follow-up to 2010’s superb Blue Valentine which reunites him with Ryan Gosling. Switching gears to a crime saga this time around, Gosling stars as a motorcycle stunt rider for a New York carnival who turns to bank robbery when he learns he has a young son to provide for. Bradley Cooper co-stars as an ambitious police officer, alongside a terrific supporting cast that includes Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Dane DeHaan and Rose Byrne. Taking place over 15 years, The Place Beyond the Pines promises to be the kind of sweeping, epic saga that rarely gets made anymore, and following this great trailer it has shot straight to the top of my most anticipated films of 2013 (alongside Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives, aka the other Gosling film).
UPDATE: A New Zealand release date has been set for June 27.
A Place Beyond the Pines hits US theatres on March 29. Watch the first trailer below.
