Aside from a handful of divisive reviews following the Venice and Toronto film festivals, very little has been seen of Terrence Malick’s new film To the Wonder. That changes today with a soaring first trailer, which boasts sweeping shots from The Tree of Life cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki and gives us our first look at the cast and story, which revolves around a love triangle between Ben Affleck (reportedly as a Malick surrogate), his French girlfriend (Olga Kurylenko), and his childhood sweetheart (Rachel McAdams). Javier Bardem also stars as a faith-striken priest, and he provides the narration here. To the Wonder seems to have inspired even more hostile reactions than The Tree of Life so far, but based on this trailer alone I’m certainly intrigued and I hope it finds New Zealand distribution soon.
To the Wonder opens February 22 in the UK and April 12 in the US. There is no NZ release scheduled at this stage. Watch the first trailer below (via The Playlist).
