Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier is known for serious dramas, such as the excellent Mads Mikkelsen-starring films Open Hearts and After the Wedding — not to mention 2010’s In A Better World, which scored her a Best Foreign Film Academy Award — but her next effort is a rather surprising departure to say the least: a rom-com titled Love Is All You Need with Pierce Brosnan! Trine Dyrholm (A Royal Affair) stars as a hairdresser who has lost her hair to cancer and discovers her husband (Kim Bodnia) is having an affair. She travels to Italy for her daughter’s wedding and along the way meets a ruthless businessman and grieving widower (Pierce Brosnan) who turns out to be the father of the groom. The complicated soap opera-esque plot and predictable rom-com trappings evident in this trailer unfortunately bring to mind Nancy Myers (Something’s Gotta Give), while the beautiful European locations mixed with love and family issues in multiple languages are very late-era Woody Allen, and despite the two leads looking appealing I can’t help but feel nonplussed about this film and why Bier chose to make it.
Love is All You Need is out December 13 in NZ. Watch the trailer below (via The Playlist).
