Originally set for a June release this year, Bryan Singer’s fairy tale epic Jack the Giant Killer was given a vote of no confidence by Warner Bros. following the lukewarm reception to its first trailer and quickly rescheduled for early 2013. The film has since been retitled Jack the Giant Slayer, and this week we got a brand new trailer which shows off some expensive new visual effects and a much grander scale. However, Nicholas Hoult still looks rather bland in the lead role, the world presented here looks like a disappointing CGI-fest, and despite a strong supporting cast — including Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Warwick Davis, Bill Nighy, and Ian McShane — the dialogue and humour on display here is rather cringeworthy. The talent involved here may still have the potential to better this year’s dire entries in the dark fantasy genre — Mirror, Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman, not to mention the abominable-looking Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters — but Jack the Giant Slayer doesn’t look likely to justify this unimaginative Hollywood trend which has been so pervasive since the unlikely (and unwarranted) success of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland in 2010.
Jack the Giant Slayer is due March 1, 2013 in the US. Watch the new trailer below (via The Playlist).
