Cult horror filmmaker Don Coscarelli (Phantasm) returns this year with John Dies at the End, nearly a decade on from his beloved and absurdly entertaining previous film Bubba Ho-Tep. This film’s story revolves around a new drug dubbed “soy sauce” which promises an out-of-body experience — allowing users to drift across time and dimensions, with some coming back inhuman — and two unlikely heroes (Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes) who must save the world from an otherworldly invasion. Paul Giamatti co-stars, alongside Doug Jones, Chase Williamson and Clancy Brown. Based on this new trailer (and awesome retro poster), John Dies at the End promises to be another wildly absurd, darkly comic and unpredictable — aside from the titular spoiler — wacky sci-horror effort from Coscarelli in a similar vein to Bubba Ho-Tep, and I’m intrigued to see whether it works. Fingers crossed it does well enough for Coscarelli to finally make that Bubba Nosferatu and the Curse of the She-Vampires prequel he’s been promising fans!
John Dies at the End hits iTunes on December 27 and theaters January 25 in the US. Check out the new trailer and poster below (via Slashfilm).
