[WATCH] Grindhouse-style teaser trailer for Paul Schrader & Bret Easton Ellis’ THE CANYONS fails to impress

The Canyons was a sketchy proposition from the start: a micro-budget, largely crowd-sourced contemporary L.A. noir exploring the dangers of sexual obsession and ambition, written by Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) and directed by Paul Schrader (Affliction), starring porn star James Deen alongside troubled actress Lindsay Lohan. The disparate talent involved certainly makes it intriguing — and as a fan of Easton Ellis’ novels and Schrader’s films I’m interested to see how the experiment works — but this first teaser trailer is not a good sign. Shot on digital but then overlayed with film scratches to mimic ’70s grindhouse films, the entire thing looks unappealing and rather disastrous, and everything is so overwhelmed by the messy style that it’s difficult to tell whether they’re trying to cover up crappy footage or if this is just a nonsense trailer and there’s actually something worth looking at under the surface.
