The first trailer has surfaced for Italian actor/director Sergio Castellitto’s new film Twice Born ahead of its imminent premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Based on a novel by Margaret Mazzantini, the film reunites Castellitto with his Don’t Move actress Penélope Cruz, starring here as a single mother who brings her 16-year-old son back to Sarajevo where his father died during the Bosnian conflict of the 1990s. Emile Hirsch co-stars as an exuberant young American photographer in the flashback scenes. This beautiful first trailer looks very promising, and while the story certainly has the potential to be overly melodramatic, I’m excited to see Cruz in her first decent lead role since Pedro Almodóvar’s Broken Embraces.
