A haunting trailer has surfaced for Julia Loktev’s mysterious second feature The Loneliest Planet, which is screening at the imminent 2012 New Zealand International Film Festival. The film stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Hani Furstenberg as a young couple engaged to be married. The summer before their wedding, they hire a local guide and go backpacking in the stunning Caucasus Mountains in Georgia. Something occurs on the trip which suddenly changes things irrevocably, threatening to undo everything the couple believed about each other and about themselves. While the voiceover in this trailer doesn’t exactly work, I’m otherwise intrigued to discover what the fascinating mystery at the heart of this deceptively simple film is, and along with Pablo Larraín’s No this marks the second very promising film of 2012 to star Bernal.
The Loneliest Planet opens in select US theatres on October 26, and New Zealand audiences can catch it at the NZ International Film Festival this month. Watch the first trailer below (via The Playlist).
