The first trailer has been released for David O. Russell’s new film Silver Linings Playbook, and it looks as though the writer/director of The Fighter and I Heart Huckabees is returning to his comedic roots circa Flirting With Disaster here. Adapted from Matthew Quick’s novel, the film stars Bradley Cooper as Pat Peoples, a former high school teacher who moves back in with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver) after being released from an eight-month stint in a psychiatric hospital, following the failure of his marriage. Pat is determined to get his life back together, and along the way he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a beautiful and equally messed up young woman. Chris Tucker (!) also shows up as Pat’s friend Danny. While this trailer looks surprisingly conventional, with Russell behind the helm I imagine things will not be quite as predictable as they seem, and Cooper looks likely to deliver his best performance to date under Russell’s tutelage. Lawrence looks as reliable as ever, and it will be fascinating to see the Winter’s Bone and The Hunger Games star in her first “adult” role so far.
