BIG DAY OUT 2012 First Line-up Announcement

The first line-up announcement for Big Day Out 2012 was drip-fed to social media sites over the last 12 hours (an annoying strategy for fans I must say). The headliners for the Australasian summer music festival are reformed grunge rockers Soundgarden and hip hop mogul Kanye West. These headliners weren’t supposed to be announced til late this morning, but the NZ Herald let the cat out of the bag early. Other highlights also include experimental noise-rock outfit Battles, controversial hip-hop collective OFWGKTA (AKA Odd Future) and Norwegian electronic duo Röyksopp.

Read the full line-up for the New Zealand Big Day Out below:

Kasabian, Best Coast, Foster The People, Cage The Elephant, Gin Wigmore, Girl Talk, David Dallas, Odd Future, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Battles, Cut Off Your Hands, Miriachi el Bronx, Ghost Wave, Beastwars, MayaVanya,
Röyksopp, The Living End, My Chemical Romance, Soundgarden, Kanye West.

UPDATE: Tony Hawk will also appear at Big Day Out 2012. To skate, I guess. [12pm 30/09]

I’m incredibly excited about the prospect of finally seeing Soundgarden live. They were always my favourite band of the Seattle grunge era and it feels like I’ve been waiting my whole life to see them. I’m also keen to see Kanye West again after the mighty performance I witnessed at this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival over in Queensland. Battles are great live and I’m curious to see how they work now without frontman Tyondai Braxton in the fold. I’m not sure exactly what to expect from OFWGKTA (or Odd Future), but they promise to be an unique experience.

I’m already sold on Big Day Out 2012, but I’ll be eagerly anticipating the second line-up announcement later this year (and anxiously fretting over scheduling conflicts). Let’s hope next year’s festival can avoid the poor sound, organisation (Boiler Room running 30 minutes late) and weather which marred Auckland’s Big Day Out this year.

Tickets are NZ$160 and can purchased from October 14th over at the Big Day Out website, or through Ticketmaster and Real Groovy outlets.
