In an alternate timeline we would be watching Guillermo Del Toro’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey this week, which makes for a fascinating “What if?”, but instead we’re getting the first trailer to his long-awaited giant monsters vs. robots film Pacific Rim. This film has long been one of my most anticipated of 2013, largely due to the fact that the visionary Pan’s Labyrinth filmmaker hasn’t directed a film since 2008’s excellent Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but also because it’s an original sci-fi premise with an interesting cast of under-the-radar actors — Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Idris Elba (Luther), Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) — that seems to be operating on a huge scale. This first trailer looks every bit as epic as expected, and while it understandably favours spectacle over story — leading some to bring up unflattering comparisons to Real Steel, Transformers, Cloverfield and Godzilla — I’m convinced that Del Toro will deliver something much more unique and fantastical than all of those films combined.
Pacific Rim storms theatres worldwide on July 11, 2013. Check out the first trailer, viral video and posters below (via The Playlist).
