The first trailer finally arrived today for Oldboy director Park Chan-wook’s English-language debut Stoker, and it looks every bit as impressive, stylized and chilling as fans would expect. The film follows India (Mia Wasikowska), who is dealing with the loss of her father, when her enigmatic and estranged Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode) suddenly returns to the family and takes up with her unstable mother, Evelyn (Nicole Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect the mysterious and charming man has ulterior motives, but rather than being outraged India becomes strangely drawn to him. With all three leads looking in fine form, Park’s trademark visual style evident, Clint Mansell’s atmospheric score, and an undeniably Hitchcockian flavour (see: Shadow of a Doubt), Stoker promises to be the perfect cinematic storm, and after this exciting teaser it’s going to be a long wait until its 2013 release.
Stoker is due March 1, 2013 in the US. Written by Prison Break actor Wentworth Miller under the pseudonym Ted Foulke, the film also stars Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, Alden Ehrenreich and Dermot Mulroney. Watch the first trailer below.
