The first trailer has arrived for 12 Years a Slave, the latest drama from acclaimed filmmaker Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame) and one of my most anticipated films of the year. Based on the autobiography by Solomon Northup, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free black man in pre-Civil War New York who is abducted and sold into slavery. The sensational supporting cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Alfre Woodard, Dwight Henry, Quvenzhané Wallis, Lupita Nyongo, Scoot McNairy, Michael Kenneth Williams and Garret Dillahunt. The first trailer promises the same high caliber performances and artistry that we have come to expect from McQueen, and combined with such potent source material, this film as awards potential written all over it.
12 Years a Slave is due October 18 in the US. Check out the trailer and poster below.
