Jeff Nichols’ is fast becoming one of America’s most essential young filmmakers, following his impressive debut Shotgun Stories and 2011’s powerful Take Shelter. His third feature is Mud, which finds Nichols’ teaming up with Matthew McConaughey for an atmospheric Southern Gothic set in Mississippi. Two teenage boys on an adventure encounter a fugitive (McConaughey) hiding out on an island and form a pact to help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail and to reunite him with his true love (Reese Witherspoon). Tye Sheridan (The Tree Of Life) co-stars alongside Sam Shephard, Sarah Paulson, and regular Nichols’ collaborator Michael Shannon. After debuting at Cannes last year, Mud is set for its US premiere at Sundance this month, and the film looks like another winner for its talented filmmaker and recently revitalised star.
Mud opens limited April 26 in the US. Watch the first trailer below (via The Playlist).
