Denmark’s entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming Academy Awards and Golden Globes is A Royal Affair, a lavish and impressively acted historical drama set in the 18th century which tells the fascinating true story of an ordinary man who wins the Queen’s heart and starts a revolution. Written and directed by Nikolaj Arcel (co-writer of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), this stately film stars Danish superstar Mads Mikkelsen (The Hunt, Casino Royale) opposite up-and-coming Swedish actress Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina), as well as Mikkel Følsgaard as the mentally ill King Christian VII in his feature debut — who picked up the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival (where the film also won Best Script). A Royal Affair will appeal to fans of sumptuous costume dramas as well as those with an interest in the history of the Enlightenment, and A Fistful of Culture will be giving away three copies on Blu-ray this week thanks to Madman.
A Royal Affair is out now in NZ on Blu-ray and DVD. Check out the trailer below.
