Benh Zeitlin’s stunning debut film Beasts of the Southern Wild — which was one of my highlights of the 2012 NZ International Film Festival — is coming to New Zealand cinemas this week. This allegorical tale follows Hushpuppy (Quvenzhane Wallis), a rambunctious six-year-old girl who is faced with both her hot-tempered father’s (Dwight Henry) ailing health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community. Wallis is spellbinding in her acting debut, and Zeitlin’s imaginative and unforgettable film is one of the best of 2012 — collecting the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance as well as the Camera D’or award for best first film at Cannes. Beasts of the Southern Wild will be released on November 29, and A Fistful of Culture is proud to have double passes to giveaway throughout this week thanks to Hoyts.
