Ascendant Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar has announced a one-off New Zealand show in December at Auckland’s Powerstation. He will be touring in support of his brilliant debut studio LP good kid, m.A.A.d city, which was released this week to widespread critical acclaim. On first listen, this sounds like the freshest, most fully-realised hip-hop debut in years. After a couple more spins it’s starting to sound like an instant classic, and probably the best rap release since Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Not only is the rapping virtuoso, the production top-notch, and the roster of guest appearances impressive, but more importantly the album gives you an empathetic, intelligent, expansive and detailed feel for Lamar’s life, family and city that is simply awe-inspiring. good kid, m.A.A.d city rivals Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange and Fiona Apple’s The Idler Wheel… as an Album of the Year competitor, and I’m excited to hear what these tracks sound like live. Lamar gave us a taste of his mic skills on Conan last night with a performance of his great single ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’, and you can check that out below.
