[LISTEN] FLYING LOTUS: ‘Until The Quiet Comes’

Bass music guru and Brainfeeder honcho Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus returns next week with his much anticipated fourth LP Until the Quiet Comes, the follow-up to 2010’s breakthrough album Cosmogramma. We’ve previously heard the dizzy, jazz-inflected single ‘See Thru To U‘ (featuring Erykah Badu), seen a gorgeous short film, and most recently been treated to an animated video for the blippy track ‘Putty Boy Strut‘, and now you can stream the album in its entirety. On first listen, this is another remarkably diverse and sonically adventurous journey — his releases always feel more like one long suite than simply a collection of tracks — and FlyLo seems to have effortlessly lived up to the massive expectations set by Cosmogramma, which remains one of my favourite electronica albums of the past few years. Past collaborators Thom Yorke (‘Electric Candyman’), Thundercat (‘DMT Song’), and Laura Darlington (‘Phantasm’) return to add some swirling, moody vocals to the proceedings — as does the aforementioned Badu, for whom he is reportedly producing a forthcoming album — and FlyLo’s ear for talent also extends to up-and-coming singer Niki Randa, who features on two tracks here. Until the Quiet Comes is another exciting, dizzying and intricate album from an artist on the top of his game, and I’m looking forward to immersing myself in it further. I suggest you do the same.

Until the Quiet Comes is out October 2. Stream it below (via NPR).
