A second theatrical trailer for Len Wiseman’s update of Total Recall has been released, and this one shows off the film’s supersize budget even more than the last with a series of relentless action scenes. For those in need of a quick refresher: Total Recall is a new sci-fi/action adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s 1966 novelette We Can Remember it for You Wholesale – following Paul Verhoeven’s cult 1990 film – starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel and Bryan Cranston. As with the first trailer, this film continues to look like a patchwork of previous, superior Dick adaptations here – with its wannabe Blade Runner and Minority Report style – and it doesn’t seem to me that Wiseman has stepped up his game enough to pull this off. The dialogue sounds clunky, the action looks like a videogame at times, the story seems predictable and derivative, and Farrell is unfortunately saddled with two of the least talented actresses in Hollywood. Fans of Verhoeven’s original film may be satiated by a reference to the three-boobed lady, but I’m not exactly sold on this expensive and likely unnecessary remake.
Total Recall hits August 3. Watch the second trailer below (via the Playlist).
