Italian maestro Matteo Garrone returned last year with Reality, a darkly comic follow-up to his 2008 crime masterpiece Gomorrah, and following a lengthy festival run the film is making its way back to New Zealand cinemas this week. Newcomer Aniello Arena stars as Luciano, a Neopolitan fishmonger and natural born performer who is encouraged by family and friends to try out for Big Brother, only to have his perception of reality warped by the promise of fame. This tragicomic satire — alternately spectacular and confounding, with echoes of Scorsese’s The King of Comedy — is essential viewing for Italian cinema aficionados, and A Fistful of Culture is giving away three double passes thanks to Trigger Marketing.
Reality is screening at Rialto cinemas from August 15. Watch the trailer below.
