Following star-making turns in cable shows The Wire and Luther — not to mention supporting roles in the blockbuster likes of Thor, Prometheus and Pacific Rim — Idris Elba is now set to dominate the big screen with his first lead role in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Based on Nelson Mandela’s 1994 autobiography of the same name, this biopic clearly has its sights set on awards glory and Elba looks the part here, delivering a convincing South African accent and a seemingly powerful portrayal of the iconic freedom fighter. The film itself, however, looks to be rather conventional biopic fare in this first trailer, and the previous work from writer William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Misérables) and director Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl) does little to dissuade that assumption. Still, this should at least be worth a look for the terrific Elba and Naomie Harris (Skyfall), who have long been deserving of more substantial roles.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom opens November 29 in the US. Take a look at the first trailer, teaser and poster below.
