Like clockwork, Woody Allen is back with his latest annual effort, Blue Jasmine, the follow-up to last year’s disappointing To Rome with Love. Forgoing his recent penchant for European locations in favour of San Francisco this time, the film stars Cate Blanchett as a fashionable New York housewife whose life is thrown into crisis when her husband (Alec Baldwin) loses everything and she is forced to go and stay with her working class sister (Sally Hawkins). The eclectic ensemble also includes Bobby Cannavale, Peter Sarsgaard, Michael Stuhlbarg, and, most interestingly, comedians Louis C.K. and Andrew Dice Clay. The material looks darker than anything Allen has done in a while, and Blanchett looks as terrific as expected in what could be her best role in years, so here’s hoping the film delivers.
Blue Jasmine arrives July 26 in the US and September 5 in NZ. Check out the first trailer and poster below.
