Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve impressed greatly with his 2011 international breakthrough Incendies, which earned much acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Film. One his biggest admirers appears to be the rather selective Jake Gyllenhaal, who is starring in not one but two of his next films. The first of which is Prisoners, an abduction thriller featuring a top-notch ensemble that includes Hugh Jackman, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo and Paul Dano. Jackman leads the cast as a Boston family man whose worst nightmare comes true when his six-year-old daughter and her best friend are abducted. Gyllenhaal is the detective heading the investigation who arrests a suspect (Dano) only to release him due to lack of evidence, causing the desperate father to kidnap this man and begin his own interrogation. Shot by renowned cinematographer Roger Deakins, Prisoners has a fine pedigree and this first trailer promises gritty and raw drama akin to fellow Boston crime hallmarks Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone.
Prisoners is due September 20 in the US. Watch the first trailer below.
