Following two classic genre-skewing comedies — 2004’s rom-com with zombies Shaun of the Dead and 2006’s buddy-cop action/comedy Hot Fuzz — director Edgar Wright and longtime friends/collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have finally completed their beloved Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy with The World’s End. The first trailer for the long-awaited film has surfaced online, and it does not disappoint. The film stars Pegg and Frost alongside Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan as five friends who reunite to attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier — when they failed to reach the fabled pub ‘The World’s End’ — only to unwittingly become humanity’s only hope for survival. Rosamund Pike co-stars and some familiar UK comedy faces appear, including Mark Heap (Spaced), Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen) and Alice Lowe (Sightseers). Tackling the social science fiction genre this time around, The World’s End looks to be on a bigger scale than the previous films (Tripods!) but still possesses the same hilarious spirit — as evidenced by the inclusion of another failed jumping-the-fence gag. All signs point towards another home run for the trio, and the overwhelming anticipation now has me considering yet another re-watch of the first two films.
UPDATE [15/05]: Edgar Wright has confirmed via Twitter that a New Zealand release has been set for July 18, as well as this piece of amazing news: “And we are coming over too!” (It seems as though they — likely Wright, Pegg and Frost — are headed to Wellington, undoubtedly slotting in a catch-up with pal Peter Jackson while they’re at it).
The World’s End debuts in the UK on July 19 before heading to the US on August 23. Watch the first trailer below.
