An exciting new trailer has been released for Sofia Coppola’s much-anticipated The Bling Ring, which was recently confirmed to open the Un Certain Regard selection at Cannes 2013. In what looks to be a breakout lead performance, Emma Watson stars as the leader of a group of fame-obsessed, hard-partying teenagers — played by relative unknowns Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Pfister and Georgia Rock — who track celebrities’ whereabouts online in order to rob their homes. Inspired by a fascinating true story, the film co-stars Leslie Mann and Gavin Rossdale and will feature celebrity cameos from the likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst, Rachel Bilson and Lindsay Lohan. As always with Coppola, the trailer features an excellent soundtrack — Azealia Banks’ ‘212’ and Sleigh Bells’ ‘Crown on the Ground’ — and the film looks to be a unique commentary on celebrity and millennials. After the relative disappointment of her last two efforts (Marie Antoinette, Somewhere), I’m hoping that The Bling Ring is a return to form for the talented writer/director, and based on what we see here it certainly has potential.
The Bling Ring opens in the US on June 14; no word on a NZ release yet. Watch the new trailer below.
