With Iron Man 3 hitting cinemas this week, Marvel have released the first trailer for their next Phase Two entry, Thor: The Dark World. Directed by TV veteran Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, The Sopranos), this trailer teases more realm-crossing action, with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) facing a mysterious new villain, Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), and rekindling his romance with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) only to have it threatened. All of this is bound to please diehard fans, but I found the trailer to be totally underwhelming until the very final scene in which the slippery Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is brought back into the fold by his desperate brother. Perhaps things will get more interesting once we see more of Eccleston’s character and this “dark world”. Kenneth Branagh’s first entry was somewhat of a mixed bag — with the Shakespearean family drama working best — and although it’s difficult to tell at this early stage how the sequel will play out, I can’t say that I’m excited about anything we see here aside from the prospect of Hiddleston stealing more scenes.
Thor: The Dark World arrives November 8, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellen Skarsgaard, Natalie Portman, Rene Russo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Zachary Levi, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Christopher Eccleston and Idris Elba.
