One of the best films of 2011 has at long last found its way to DVD in New Zealand, and A Fistful of Culture has three copies to giveaway thanks to Madman. Elena is the latest gripping slow-burn from Russian maestro Andrey Zvyagintsev, who stunned festival audiences with his 2003 directorial debut The Return and has been earning equal praise this time around, winning the Special Jury Prize at Cannes 2011. This taut, engrossing noir follows Elena (Nadezhda Markina), a dutiful housewife whose potential inheritance is threatened when her husband (Andrey Smirnov) decides his distant daughter will be the sole heiress of his wealth following a serious heart attack. With Elena’s hopes of caring for her son and grandchildren crushed, she must hatch a desperate plan. Boasting a terrific lead performance and a score from none other than Phillip Glass, as well as an enlightening (and grim) vision of post-Soviet Russia, Elena is a must-see for serious cinephiles.
Elena is out now on DVD. Watch the trailer below.
