Acclaimed documentarians Lucien Castaing-Taylor (Sweetgrass) and Vérena Paravel (Foreign Parts) have teamed up on Leviathan, an intriguing look into the challenges facing a crew of New England fisherman in the very waters that inspired Melville’s Moby Dick. Shot on a dozen small, waterproof cameras that were tethered to, or tossed between, fishermen and filmmakers, the film promises visuals and sounds like no other and it certainly seems to be quite an immersive, visceral experience. Following the strong festival buzz received so far and this absolutely fascinating first trailer, I’m adding Leviathan to my most anticipated films of 2013 list and hoping that it makes an appearance at the 2013 NZ International Film Festival.
Leviathan opens limited in the US on March 1. Check out the first trailer and poster below (via The Film Stage).
