My Morning Jacket/Monsters of Folk frontman Jim James is set to release his debut solo LP Regions of Light and Sound of God next week, and the entire album is now available to stream. James previously released an EP of George Harrison covers under the monicker Yim Yames, but this is first proper attempt at a solo career and he well and truly embraces it, playing every instrument as well as engineering the album himself. Inspired by Lynd Ward’s 1929 woodcut art book A God’s Man, this ambitious concept album addresses themes of spirituality, loneliness and redemption on a smaller — and yet no less rewarding — scale than that of his usual full-time gigs, recalling both John Lennon at his most introspective and Harrison at his most enlightened. On first listen this is a gorgeous album that places one of the most majestic voices of his generation front and centre in a refreshingly intimate setting, and this is certainly one of the most satisfying releases of 2013 so far.
Regions of Light and Sound of God is due February 5. Stream it below (via NPR).
