The first trailer has arrived for The East — writer/director Zal Batmanglij and writer/actress Brit Marling’s highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s excellent Sound of My Voice — which coincides with the film’s Sundance debut this week. Starring Marling, Ellen Page, Alexander Skarsgård and Patricia Clarkson, the film centres on a contract worker who is tasked with infiltrating an anarchist group, only to find herself falling for its leader. This intense trailer wisely keeps things mysterious, teasing a bunch of evocative imagery while revealing little to nothing of the story and characters. The East promises to be a smart, stylish and seemingly more ambitious companion piece to Sound of My Voice, and considering that was one of my favourite films of last year, I have high hopes indeed.
