The first trailer has landed for the promising British crime thriller Welcome to the Punch, directed by Eran Creevy (Shifty). The film stars James McAvoy as a driven detective whose criminal nemesis (Mark Strong) suddenly reappears from hiding following a heist gone wrong involving his son (Game of Thrones‘ Elyes Gabel). But there appears to be more than meets the eye in this deceptively simple set-up, and both men may have to work together as a deeper conspiracy is uncovered. With an impressive cast of British character actors on board — including Andrea Riseborough (Shadow Dancer), Daniel Mays (Red Riding Trilogy), David Morrissey (The Walking Dead), Steve Oram (Sightseers) and Peter Mullan (Tyrannosaur) — and some slick Michael Mann-esque visuals on display here, I’m certainly intrigued by this film and hope it turns out to be the fresh British action-thriller it appears and not yet another Guy Ritchie knock-off.
Welcome to the Punch hits UK cinemas on March 15. Watch the first trailer plus a new clip below.
