After numerous delays, Wong Kar-Wai’s long-awaited martial arts epic The Grandmaster is finally finished and will open in China next month. The film — which stars regular collaborator Tony Leung (Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love) as the legendary Ip Man and Zhang Ziyi (2046) as his wife — was recently given a Chinese theatrical trailer, but it wasn’t until today that English subtitles were added courtesy of Andrew Chan at Film Comment. As expected the footage looks absolutely gorgeous, with plenty of poetic, highly-stylised slow-motion fight scenes and Leung looking as reliable as ever, and this new trailer gives us a better understanding of the story. It’s been five long years since Kar-Wai’s disappointing last effort — 2007’s English-language debut My Blueberry Nights — and I can’t wait to see what promises to be both an interesting new departure and strong return to form for the masterful auteur.
The Grandmaster opens in China on December 18. There are no further international release dates scheduled yet. Check out the new subtitled trailer and a new poster below (via The Playlist).
UPDATE: The Grandmaster has now been delayed until January 8 in China due to recent reshoots. You can find four new character posters below.
