The first trailer has hit for Fede Alvarez’s remake of Sam Raimi’s 1981 horror classic The Evil Dead. Now simply titled Evil Dead, the film stars Jane Levy (Suburgatory) as Mia, a young woman struggling with sobriety who heads to a remote cabin with her brother and a few twenty-something friends — played by Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci and Elizabeth Blackmore — where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads to unimaginable horror. Raimi was pretty heavily involved with the New Zealand-shot production, co-producing alongside Rob Tapert and original star Bruce Campbell as well as co-writing with Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues Mendez and Diablo Cody, so it’s safe to assume that it has his blessing and will likely satisfy fans of the original franchise. If this red-band trailer is anything to go by, Evil Dead certainly won’t be skimping on the blood and gore, apparently trying to top the original in sheer intensity and grueling horror. My only concern while watching this was how closely the plot seems to follow Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s The Cabin in the Woods — which cleverly referenced and toyed with The Evil Dead‘s legacy — and wondering how much of a distraction that may prove to be.
Evil Dead opens April 12 in the US. Watch the red-band trailer below (via The Playlist).
