The Mountain Goats will return next month with Transcendental Youth, their fourteenth studio album and follow-up to last year’s impressive All Eternals Deck. We’ve previously heard the bouncy, horn-featuring track ‘Cry For Judas‘, and this week John Darnielle debuted two more new songs in separate performances. The first was a waterfront appearance in New York for Pitchfork.tv, where he delivered an acoustic rendition of ‘Harlem Roulette’ and discussed Frankie Lymon, whose life was the inspiration for the song’s lyrics. Darnielle then appeared on WYNC Radio and gave a solo piano take on the track ‘In Memory of Satan’. Both performances were stripped of the brass which will appear on Transcendental Youth, but Darnielle is always more than capable of carrying a song by himself and these clips are no exception.
Transcendental Youth is out October 2. Watch John Darnielle perform ‘Harlem Roulette’ below (via P4K).
