Brooklyn ethereal R&B artist Tom Krell aka How To Dress Well returns this week with his sophomore LP Total Loss, following up 2010’s impressive Love Remains and his first new music since last year’s Just Once EP. After a few spins, Total Loss sounds like Krell’s most fully-formed release yet, expanding on the sparse atmospherics and whispery vocals of past releases and placing his markedly more confident falsetto front and centre. The lone dance number ‘& It Was You’ is Krell at his most accessible and will likely serve as a good entry point for newcomers, while the rest of the confessional album finds the singer/songwriter/producer dealing with some pretty heavy grief and seemingly coming through the other side, most affectingly on the beguiling album closer ‘Ocean Floor For Everything’. Total Loss is another high-water mark in the burgeoning indie R&B world — up there with recent entries from Frank Ocean and The Weeknd — and it positions How To Dress Well as one of the great innovators of the genre.
