Adventurous Portland indie rockers Menomena are back next week with a new LP titled Moms, their follow-up to 2010’s Mines. The making of that album was fraught with turmoil for the songwriting trio, and Brent Knopf subsequently left the group to focus on his Ramona Falls project. Danny Seim and Justin Harris decided to soldier on as a duo and ruminate on family, and more specifically, mothers — Seim’s died in ’94, Harris’ raised him alone — and the resulting album is their most emotional, dramatic and musically aggressive to date, surprisingly never feeling like it needs Knopf’s contributions. The diverse tracks on Moms range from uptempo, horn-filled numbers (‘Capsule’), to Damon Albarn-esque ballads (‘Heavy Is As Heavy Does’), to regretful, finger-pointing rockers (‘Pique’), all of which add up to a highly satisfactory and recommended album.
Moms is out September 18. Stream it below (via Barsuk).
