A trailer for James Ponsoldt’s alcoholism drama Smashed has finally arrived, which reportedly features a breakout performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) that wowed audiences at Sundance earlier this year. Winstead stars alongside Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) as a party-loving married couple whose bond is put to the test when she decides to get sober. This trailer certainly gets straight to the point, opening with: “Last night I ended up smoking crack.” The supporting cast includes Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Octavia Spencer and Mary Kay Place, and the film’s score is written by Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats) and Andy Cabic (Vetiver), which is all very promising. I’m excited to see Winstead and Paul branch out here, and Smashed looks to be one of the must-see indie films of the year.
Smashed opens October 12 in the US. Watch the first trailer below (via Slashfilm).
