Ahead of its upcoming world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, a new theatrical trailer has been released for Cloud Atlas, the epic adaptation of David Mitchell’s best-selling sci-fi novel by the Washowskis and Tom Tykwer. We’ve previously seen a six-minute trailer which showcased the film’s ridiculous ambition, arresting visuals and all-star cast — including Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, Doona Bae, James D’Arcy, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Keith David and Susan Sarandon — and in this shorter trailer we get our first look at a secondary character for Whishaw, as well as some more impressive action and seemingly awful line readings from Berry. In a recent in-depth The New Yorker profile, the Wachowskis explained that Cloud Atlas is their attempt at making something like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and while it’s impossible to tell from these trailers whether the film will be a triumph or disaster, the filmmakers ambitious intentions are certainly admirable and I hope they pay off here.
Cloud Atlas will hit US screens on October 26. Watch the theatrical trailer below (via The Playlist).
